Database Guidelines: Anime

These guidelines are designed to maintain a high-quality and consistent anime database on Nevix. Adherence to these rules is crucial for a positive user experience and a well-organized database. Moderators retain the final say on all submissions and interpretations of these guidelines. Ignoring these guidelines may result in content removal, edits being rejected, or even temporary/permanent bans.

What is “Anime”?

The definition of “anime” is nuanced. Nevix uses a strict definition encompassing these criteria:

  • Animation: The work must be primarily animated. Minimal animation (e.g., manga panels, visual novel stills) is insufficient, unless it’s a picture drama special for an existing franchise. Stop-motion animation using clay or cutouts is acceptable; stop-motion with live actors is not.
  • Origin: The work must be created by professional staff based in Japan, or through a joint production with studios in Japan, Korea (aeni), or China (donghua).
  • Intended Medium: The work must be intended as an animated piece. Animated cutscenes from games or live-action shows are ineligible. Live-action scenes are permitted if they constitute less than half the episode’s runtime. VTuber content is not considered animation.
  • Originality: The work must not be a simple edit, cut, or promotional version of another animated work. Foreign edits, recaps with voiceover commentary, trailers, PVs, and most remasters are ineligible.

Anime Entry Types & Divisions

  • Concurrent Releases: The primary release method (TV, OVA, ONA, Movie) determines the entry type. Simultaneous releases on TV and streaming platforms generally retain the TV type. Limited theatrical screenings before wider release are considered pre-airing events and don’t automatically qualify as a “Movie” entry.
  • Re-releases & Format Changes: Re-releases with significant new content warrant a new entry. Re-edits or format changes (e.g., OVA to TV) may require a new entry if the changes are substantial (different episode durations, significant added content). Minor changes (remastering without added content) generally do not.
  • TV Series: Seasons are split if there’s a significant gap (at least one cour, ~12 weeks) between them. If a continuation is explicitly labeled as a new season with a different title, it gets a separate entry. Extra episodes to fill broadcast schedules are included in the main entry. Remasters generally do not warrant new entries.
  • Movies: Theatrical releases are separate entries unless all chapters are released together or the gap between releases is less than 3 months.
  • OVA: OVA episodes are combined unless the franchise is OVA-only, a new season airs between OVA releases, or there’s significant ambiguity requiring division (determined by OP/ED themes).
  • Specials: Specials (episode 0, recaps, unaired episodes, short animations) are combined into one entry per main series unless they are significantly different in type or are associated with a sequel that has its own entry.
  • ONA: ONA entries follow the same rules as TV regarding concurrent releases and significant gaps between seasons.

Anime Information Fields

  • Title:
    • Prefer the official title and offical title translations if available.
    • If multiple entries share the same title, the most recent entry includes the type or year in parentheses.
    • Season numbers are standardized (“2nd Season,” “Part 2”). “Gekijouban” and “eiga” are replaced with “Movie.”
  • Synopsis:
    • Writers must stick to facts that can be verified and should not include their own original theories or conclusions.
    • When using source material, don’t copy directly or just slightly modify copyrighted text. Instead, thoroughly understand the source material and then completely rewrite it using your own words and structure. The main exception is when you need to use brief, specific quotes - these must be properly marked with quotation marks, cite the source within the text, and generally name who said/wrote it.
    • Don’t include links.
  • Cover Image:
    • No explicit or pornographic content
    • NSFW elements must be appropriately censored
    • Use high-quality, official artwork only
    • Apply “Sensitive” content warning for potentially disturbing images
    • Images should be clear, properly cropped, and well-formatted
  • Airing Dates: Use Japan Standard Time.
  • Rating: Follow Nevix’s rating system (G, PG, PG13, R, NC17).

Data Submission Etiquette

  • Complete Fields: Fill out as many fields as possible to expedite the approval process.
  • No Duplicate Submissions: Submitting the same entry multiple times will delay approval.
  • Respectful Communication: Address questions and concerns to moderators politely and professionally.
