This document provides explanations for various tags used to categorize anime, manga, movies, TV shows, and other media content.

Content Tags

  1. 4-Koma A comic strip format consisting of four panels arranged vertically. This style is popular in Japanese manga and often features comedic content with a punchline in the final panel. Applicable to: Manga

  2. Action Content featuring exciting action sequences where conflicts between characters are usually resolved through physical power. The narrative focuses on individual characters’ strengths and weaknesses rather than collective achievements. Applicable to: Anime, Manga, Movies, TV Shows

  3. Adaptation Content that has been adapted from another medium, such as manga adapted to anime or novels adapted to manga. Applicable to: Manga

  4. Adult Cast Content featuring mature characters who have reached adulthood and display mature behavior, not just characters who are chronologically over 18. Applicable to: Anime

  5. Adventure Stories where characters are thrust into unfamiliar situations or lands and face unexpected dangers. The narrative focuses on how characters react to events during their journey, showing personal growth or setbacks based on their choices. Applicable to: Anime, Manga, Movies, TV Shows

  6. Aliens Content featuring extraterrestrial beings or focusing on interactions between humans and alien species. Applicable to: Manga

  7. Animals Content prominently featuring animals as significant characters or central to the plot. Applicable to: Manga

  8. Animation Content created using animation techniques to simulate movement from a series of static images. Applicable to: Movies, TV Shows

  9. Anthology A collection of separate works or stories presented together, often with a common theme or by different creators. Applicable to: Manga

  10. Anthropomorphic Content featuring non-human entities with human characteristics, behaviors, or appearances. Applicable to: Anime

  11. Avant Garde Experimental content that challenges conventional storytelling methods. These works often evoke unsettled feelings by rejecting traditional perspectives and may include deconstructions of familiar genres. Applicable to: Anime

  12. Award Winning Content that has received prestigious or professional awards in Japan, such as the Tokyo Anime Award or Japan Media Arts Festival awards. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  13. Boys’ Love Content focusing on romantic or sexual relationships between male characters. In Japan, this term (and its abbreviation BL) typically refers to media created by women for female audiences. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  14. CGDCT (Cute Girls Doing Cute Things) Content featuring adorable female characters engaging in everyday activities in a lighthearted, often moe-focused manner. Applicable to: Anime

  15. Childcare Content focusing on the raising and nurturing of children, often featuring characters who work as caregivers or are responsible for children. Applicable to: Anime

  16. Comedy Content that prioritizes uplifting the audience through humor, amusement, or entertainment. Comedy stories typically have episodic structures or happy endings, with narratives focused on evoking amusement. Applicable to: Anime, Manga, Movies, TV Shows

  17. Cooking Content centered around food preparation, culinary arts, or cooking competitions. Applicable to: Manga

  18. Crime Content focusing on criminal activities, investigations, or the justice system. Applicable to: Manga, Movies, TV Shows

  19. Crossdressing Content featuring characters who routinely dress as the opposite sex while still identifying with their biological sex, often resulting in mistaken identity situations. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  20. Delinquents Content featuring characters who engage in rebellious behavior, often portrayed as school troublemakers or youth gang members. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  21. Demons Content featuring demonic entities or characters with demonic powers. Applicable to: Manga

  22. Detective A subset of Mystery content featuring professional investigators or amateur sleuths working to solve crimes or puzzling events. Characters must either be employed as investigators or sought out for their case-solving reputation. Applicable to: Anime

  23. Documentary Non-fiction content that documents reality, often educational or informative in nature. Applicable to: Movies, TV Shows

  24. Doujinshi Self-published works, typically manga, created by amateur artists or small publishers, often as fan fiction of existing works. Applicable to: Manga

  25. Drama Plot-driven stories focused on realistic characters experiencing human struggle. These narratives explore what it means to be human through relatable conflicts and emotions, even if the settings or characters themselves are fantastical. Applicable to: Anime, Manga, Movies, TV Shows

  26. Ecchi Content with suggestive sexual themes or fanservice, but not explicit enough to be considered pornographic. Applicable to: Anime

  27. Educational Content designed to teach or inform viewers about specific subjects or concepts. Applicable to: Anime

  28. Erotica Content with explicit sexual themes or depictions, more graphic than Ecchi but presented in an artistic or romantic manner. Applicable to: Anime

  29. Family Content focusing on family relationships, suitable for family viewing, or addressing family-oriented themes. Applicable to: Movies, TV Shows

  30. Fan Colored Manga that was originally black and white but has been colored by fans rather than official publishers. Applicable to: Manga

  31. Fantasy Content featuring magical powers or fantastical creatures that cannot be explained by modern science and are commonplace to much of the main cast. Fantasy can take place in imaginary worlds, alternate universes, or Earth as we know it. Applicable to: Anime, Manga, Movies, TV Shows

  32. Full Color Manga that is published in full color rather than the traditional black and white format. Applicable to: Manga

  33. Gag Humor Content featuring exaggerated, often absurd comedy focused on quick jokes and visual gags rather than complex humor. Applicable to: Anime

  34. Genderswap Content where characters change gender, either temporarily or permanently, often through magical or scientific means. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  35. Ghosts Content featuring spirits of the dead or focusing on ghost stories and hauntings. Applicable to: Manga

  36. Girls’ Love Content focusing on romantic or sexual relationships between female characters. In Japan, this is commonly referred to as “Yuri.” Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  37. Gore Content featuring graphic or excessive bloodshed, violence, or mutilation. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  38. Gourmet Content focusing on the preparation and consumption of food or drink, often featuring chefs, food connoisseurs, or detailed cooking processes and reactions to tasting. Applicable to: Anime

  39. Gyaru Content featuring or focusing on gyaru culture, a Japanese fashion subculture characterized by dyed hair, elaborate makeup, and distinctive fashion. Applicable to: Manga

  40. Harem Content featuring a protagonist (usually male) surrounded by multiple potential romantic interests (usually female). Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  41. Hentai Explicitly pornographic anime or manga content. Applicable to: Anime

  42. High Stakes Game Content centered around games or competitions with significant consequences for winning or losing, often life-changing or life-threatening. Applicable to: Anime

  43. Historical Content set in a past historical period, often featuring historical events, figures, or settings. Applicable to: Anime, Manga, Movies

  44. Horror Content designed to create and maintain a sense of dread, eliciting shock, fear, or disgust through atmosphere and frightening scenarios. The mood is of equal or greater importance than setting and characterization. Applicable to: Anime, Manga, Movies, TV Shows

  45. Idols (Female) Content focusing on female idol performers, their careers, performances, and the idol industry. Applicable to: Anime

  46. Idols (Male) Content focusing on male idol performers, their careers, performances, and the idol industry. Applicable to: Anime

  47. Incest Content featuring romantic or sexual relationships between family members. Applicable to: Manga

  48. Isekai Content where characters are transported to, reborn, or trapped in a parallel universe, another world, or a virtual reality setting. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  49. Iyashikei A subset of Slice of Life content designed to “heal” the audience by creating a calming feeling or emotional catharsis. These stories feature peaceful, mundane, and nostalgic atmospheres with little conflict. Applicable to: Anime

  50. Kids Content specifically created for or focusing on children as the primary audience. Applicable to: TV Shows

  51. Loli Content featuring young or young-looking female characters, often in a cute or innocent manner. Applicable to: Manga

  52. Long Strip Manga formatted as a continuous vertical strip designed for scrolling on digital devices, rather than traditional page-by-page reading. Applicable to: Manga

  53. Love Polygon Content featuring complex romantic relationships involving multiple characters with feelings for each other, creating a web of romantic connections. Applicable to: Anime

  54. Love Status Quo A subset of Romance content featuring couples experiencing cute, blush-inducing moments in daily life settings. These stories prioritize adorable interactions over relationship development, maintaining a “status quo” of awareness between characters. Applicable to: Anime

  55. Magic Content featuring magical elements, spells, or supernatural powers. Applicable to: Manga

  56. Magical Girls Content featuring female characters who can transform into heroines with magical powers, often fighting evil while maintaining secret identities. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  57. Martial Arts Content focusing on various forms of combat training, fighting techniques, or martial arts competitions. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  58. Mecha Content featuring large robots or mechanical suits piloted by humans, often in combat scenarios. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  59. Medical Content set in medical environments or focusing on healthcare professionals, medical procedures, or health-related issues. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  60. Military Content focusing on armed forces, military operations, or war from a strategic perspective. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  61. Monster Girls Content featuring female characters with monstrous or non-human traits while maintaining humanoid forms. Applicable to: Manga

  66. News Content focused on reporting current events or providing news coverage. Applicable to: TV Shows

  67. Ninja Content featuring ninja characters or focusing on ninja traditions, techniques, and conflicts. Applicable to: Manga

  68. Office Workers Content focusing on characters who work in office environments, often exploring workplace relationships and challenges. Applicable to: Manga

  69. Official Colored Manga that has been colored by the official publisher or creator, rather than being released in traditional black and white. Applicable to: Manga

  77. Police Content focusing on law enforcement officers and their work. Applicable to: Manga

  88. Self-Published Content that has been published by the creator without the involvement of traditional publishing companies. Applicable to: Manga

  89. Sexual Violence Content containing depictions of sexual assault or non-consensual sexual acts. Applicable to: Manga

  101. Suspense Content designed to create anticipation and excitement through twists, turns, and red herrings. Uncertainty is maintained throughout, often by withholding information, misdirection, or subverting expectations. Applicable to: Anime

  102. Talk Content featuring discussions, interviews, or conversations as the primary format. Applicable to: TV Shows

  103. Thriller Content designed to evoke excitement, suspense, surprise, and anxiety in the audience. Applicable to: Manga, Movies

  104. Time Travel Content featuring characters moving between different points in time, whether to the past or future. Applicable to: Anime, Manga

  105. Traditional Games Content focusing on traditional board games, card games, or other non-digital games. Applicable to: Manga
