Misinformation

Last Updated: August 1, 2023

Rationale

At Nevix, we acknowledge that misinformation is different from other types of speech that violate our Community Guidelines. This is because it's impossible to compile a comprehensive list of what constitutes misinformation. The world is changing constantly, and so does the information within it. Thus, our policies define different categories of misinformation and provide clear guidance on how we treat such speech. Our approach considers our commitment to the values of expression, safety, dignity, authenticity, and privacy.

We remove misinformation that poses a direct threat to cause imminent physical harm, disrupt the functioning of political processes, or propagate highly deceptive manipulated media. Our strategies to combat misinformation include partnering with independent experts, reducing the prevalence of hoaxes and viral misinformation, promoting media and digital literacy, and forbidding behaviors that often overlap with the spread of misinformation, like fake accounts and coordinated inauthentic behavior.

As the landscape of online and offline environments evolve, so will our policies. Pages, Groups, Profiles, and Nevix accounts that repeatedly share the types of misinformation specified below may face content removal, decreased distribution, advertising limitations, or removal from our platforms.

Prohibited Actions

On Nevix, we remove the following types of misinformation:

Physical Harm or Violence

We remove misinformation that expert partners deem likely to cause imminent violence or physical harm to people. This includes content determined false by an authoritative third party and unverifiable rumors that are too incredulous or irrational to believe. We work closely with NGOs, not-for-profit organizations, and international bodies who are knowledgeable about local dynamics.

Harmful Health Misinformation

We consult with leading health organizations to identify and remove health misinformation that poses an imminent threat to public health and safety. This includes, but is not limited to, misinformation about vaccines, health during public health emergencies, and harmful miracle cures for health issues. For instance, false claims related to the effectiveness of vaccines, advocating for harmful treatments, and disseminating inaccurate information during health emergencies are strictly prohibited.

Voter or Census Interference

We strive to uphold election and census integrity by removing misinformation that interferes with these processes. Misinformation about voting dates, locations, times, methods, qualifications, or misinformation about census participation and government involvement are not permitted on our platforms.

Manipulated Media

We remove certain types of manipulated media that could mislead users. If a video has been edited or synthesized beyond adjustments for clarity or quality, and it could mislead an average person into believing something false, we will remove it. This includes videos that are the product of artificial intelligence or machine learning that make the video appear authentic.

Actions Requiring Additional Context

There are instances where claims may require additional context to be accurately understood. We strive to differentiate between instances of misinformation and instances where individuals are expressing personal opinions, exaggerating for effect, or using satire. Misinformation spread in harmless ways, such as humor, exaggeration, or personal storytelling, may not necessarily be removed. Instead, our focus is to slow the spread of such content and foster an environment of productive dialogue.
