Suicide and Self-Injury

Last Updated: August 1, 2023

Rationale

At Nevix, the safety and well-being of our users is of paramount importance to us. In addressing the complex issues of suicide and self-injury, we consult with mental health experts and collaborate with support organizations globally.

We aim to create a balance where users are free to express their experiences and seek support, without promoting or glorifying self-destructive behaviors. We understand that discussions around these topics can raise awareness and foster a supportive community.

Prohibited Content

Our guidelines prohibit any content that promotes, encourages, or coordinates self-destructive actions, which include but are not limited to:

  • Suicide
  • Self-injury
  • Eating disorders

Specifically, the following are not allowed:

  1. Content that offers instructions for suicide, self-injury, or unhealthy weight loss.
  2. Graphic imagery of self-injury, regardless of context.
  3. Content that targets victims or survivors of self-destructive behaviors, either in a serious, humorous, or rhetorical manner.
  4. Material that focuses on the depiction of ribs, collar bones, thigh gaps, hips, concave stomach, or protruding spine or scapula, particularly if associated with terms related to eating disorders.
  5. Content that showcases a person who has attempted suicide or died by suicide.
  6. Mocking or ridiculing victims or survivors of suicide, self-injury, or eating disorders, whether they are publicly known or implied to have experienced such struggles.

Content Requiring Additional Context

Certain types of content require additional context for appropriate enforcement. Such content may be allowed if it aligns with the guidelines for supporting recovery and raising awareness, but it may be subject to age restrictions or sensitivity screens:

  • Content discussing older instances of self-harm such as healed cuts or other non-graphic self-injury imagery in a recovery context.
  • Content showing euthanasia/assisted suicide in a medical setting is restricted to adults over the age of 18 and will have a sensitivity screen.
  • Imagery focusing on ribs, collar bones, thigh gaps, hips, concave stomach, or protruding spine or scapula when associated with recovery from eating disorders.

Furthermore, we will provide resources to those who make written or verbal admissions of engagement in self-destructive behaviors, including suicide, self-harm, or eating disorders.

We may remove suicide notes when we receive confirmation of a suicide or suicide attempt. We identify these notes through various factors, including requests from family or legal representatives, media reports, law enforcement reports, or other third-party sources (e.g., government agencies, NGOs). A note may also be removed when reported through Nevix's Support Contact Form, given confirmation of a suicide or suicide attempt.

Emergency Situations

If we perceive immediate harm based on the content posted, we will contact local emergency services to provide help. In the case of live content where someone declares their intent to commit suicide, we will leave the stream active to allow for intervention opportunities but will discontinue the stream if the threat escalates into an attempt.
